DAVID ALLEN - BMHOF CLASS OF 2003
In a six-decades-plus career as a radio broadcaster and
musician, David Allen has charted a course of passion, dedication, and
commitment to Western New York.
Born and raised in Buffalo, Allen's love for music and
storytelling manifested early. He began his radio career as a teenager in the
1960s at WUFO-AM, He left to attend college in Poughkeepsie, NY at Dutchess
Community College where he majored in Communication Arts in Radio and
Television, but soon found himself back home at WBLK, the urban-contemporary
station that shaped the soundscape of Buffalo's African-American community.
Allen hosted popular shows like "The Soul Patrol," playing rhythm and
blues, funk, and soul music, while also championing local artists as a strong
supporter of the Buffalo scene. David also had his own television show, where
he hosted national videos and interviews with artists such as Destiny’s Child,
Teena Marie, Will Downing, Biggie Smalls, Biz Markie, and Grand Master Flash.
In 1980, Allen co-founded WDAP Radio. As CEO, Program
Director, and Music Director, he shaped the station's identity, making it a
beacon of nostalgia and community spirit. Since its founding, Allen’s business
expanded into DAP Studios and DAP Entertainment, with services including media
mentoring and education programs for disadvantaged and at-risk youth. Allen
became an advocate for social justice and equality, using his broadcast
platform to address racial discrimination, poverty, and education. He organized
concerts and charity events, raising funds and awareness for important causes.
In 1997, David won the 25th Anniversary Black
Achievers in Industry Award for outstanding community service and radio
outreach. Former Common Council Member and current Mayor Byron Brown presented
a proclamation declaring “David Allen Day” in the City of Buffalo.
Allen has also been a musician and singer, a devoted husband
and family man, an avid golfer, and has enjoyed spending time outdoors.
