WEEKEND - BMHOF CLASS OF 2000
Weekend became famous as one of Buffalo’s most recognized
groups of the 1970s. Their origins trace back to 1969, when they first
performed under the name Weekend Trip before shortening it simply to Weekend in
the early 1970s as their popularity grew.
Their classic early lineup was Denny Dunkowski – Guitar,
Rick Ryan – Bass, Tom Ryan – Drums, Bob Culver – Vocals, and Ned Wood –
Keyboards.
During their early rise, Weekend carved out a strong
regional following, performing at clubs and venues throughout Western New York.
Their polished musicianship, harmonies, and evolving rock style helped
establish them as standouts in a thriving local music scene rich with bands
from the 60s through the 80s.
By the early 1970s, Weekend recorded three singles,
contributing to their reputation as a polished and ambitious act capable of
both strong live performances and studio-quality music. Their song “You Keep Me
Waiting” remains one of the better-known surviving examples of their sound.
Throughout the decade, the band was a staple of the Buffalo
area club circuit. Their commitment to high‑quality musicianship and
performance made them a touchstone of Buffalo’s rock identity.
The significance of Weekend in Western New York’s music
history is reflected in their induction into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame
(BMHOF) in the Class of 2000. Several members of Weekend have also been honored
individually. Notably, Frank Grizanti is a two‑time inductee, once as a member
of Weekend (2000) and again individually in 2007.
Band members also intersected with other significant Buffalo
musical projects. For example, Ned Wood and Frank Grizanti later performed
together in The BBC, a Beatles‑influenced tribute group made up of well‑known
Western New York musicians.
Weekend remains a touchstone of Buffalo’s musical past.
Their influence lives on through the musicians they inspired, the projects
their members continue to participate in, and the continued interest in the
history of Western New York’s music community.
